One Page At A Time | A Seriously Funny Look At Sobriety

"There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt."
—Erma Bombeck

I’ll never forget what someone said to me at my first Alcoholics

Anonymous meeting. “Tony,” He said, “I’ve got some bad news for you. If you want to quit drinking, you are going to have to quit drinking.”

Funny, right? I thought so too. And despite the miserable, pathetic state I was in at the time I laughed. And I’ve been laughing along with the highs and lows of sobriety ever since.

For the better part of my life I have been two things—

a humorist and an alcoholic. Here is what I’ve learned:

Alcoholism is not funny. Recovering alcoholics, on the other

hand, are hilarious. That’s true for recovering addicts in general— they are for the most part, genuinely funny people with a wonderful, self deprecating senses of humor.

Don’t get me wrong. As any recovering addict will tell you, sobriety is serious. but there’s a lot to laugh at on the rocky road to recovery. And laugh we do. We want to laugh! Hell, we need to laugh!

So it is with a certain amount of selfish motivation (just like an addict) that I have written this book. But mostly it’s a way of giving back to the sober community, what they have given me all these years: laughter in the face of adversity and pain.

This is not a book about addiction, it’s a book about recovery. It’s meant to offer daily relief to the millions of recovering, substance abusers and their loved ones.

In funny, non-preachy prose, One Page at a Time offers a glimpse at what I have witnessed at countless AA and NA meetings: lots of laughs that bring about lots of lessons and healing.

With a mildly self-deprecating tone that is not only appropriate, but necessary, One Page at a Time fills a niche in the addiction/recovery genre like no other book with One Page At A Time’s brand of off-beat humor — a humor I hone each day in my nationally syndicated cartoon strip, and have refined in my eight successful book titles.
