RIDDLES | ANAGRAMS | THE REBUS | QUIRKY FACTS
The riddle is one of the oldest teasers and is a mystery often involving contradictory statements, with a hidden meaning designed as a guessing game. It can involve a shrewd or witty observation. It also has a home in the groan-worthy Christmas cracker-type of wit and playground humour.
The oldest known riddles come from Babylon - the area around modern Iraq. A rare 3,500 year-old cuneiform tablet has been translated to reveal a series of riddles about daily life and politics in ancient Mesopotamia. One of the riddles appears to rely on a metaphor to get its point across. The tower is high - it is high, but nonetheless has no shade. What is it? The answer is sunlight, because a shaft of light hitting the ground looks like a tower, but it gives no shade as it is light itself.
Another riddle attributed to the Babylonians is : What becomes fat without eating and pregnant without conceiving? Answer : a rain cloud
Although the riddle or enigma itself pre-dates the Greeks, they were the first to apply names to a variety of brainteasers, which we still use.
The ainigma, or as we call it, the enigma meant ‘dark saying’ or ‘riddle’. The most common word for a riddle was griphos, which originally meant a fishing net or basket, made of rushes. It was then applied to anything intricate, such as a riddle.

THE MONA LISA
Q. Which famous artist was suspected of the 1911 theft of The Mona Lisa? (read on for the answer)
The Mona Lisa, also known as La Gioconda or La Joconde, is an early 16th century work by Leonardo da Vinci. It is on permanent display in The Louvre museum in Paris. It is an oil painting on poplar wood, and 30 x 20 inches in size.
Due to a documented margin note found in 2005, we know that the model is called Lisa Gherardini, from an Italian farming family.
She has no visible eyebrows nor eyelashes, but the latter may have disappeared due to over-cleaning. The landscape behind her is imaginary. It is an early example of sfumato, where light and shade are blended together to give a smoky appearance rather than using hard lines.
In 1911, it was stolen, with Pablo Picasso among the suspects. People still queued up to look at the blank space where it used to hang. It was found two years later in the possession of Vincenzo Perugia, an Italian-born Louvre employee who was trying to repatriate the painting.
Over the years, attackers have hurled acid, red paint, a rock and a teacup at it. It is currently behind bulletproof glass to deter vandals.
In 1919, Marcel Duchamp created the parody ‘L.H.O.O.Q’., which roughly means ‘she has a hot ass’ in French when the letters are said aloud. It is a postcard of the Mona Lisa with a moustache and goatee beard added in pencil. A version by Salvador Dali replaces the model’s face with his
The old saying is true – blood is 6 times thicker than water.
Everybody produces more than 1,000 pounds of red blood cells in a lifetime. These cells live for four months on average; travelling between the lungs and other tissues 75,000 times. Then they return to the bone marrow to die.
Karl Landsteiner discovered the different blood types in 1900.
One heartbeat pumps about five tablespoons of blood, and this amounts to 2,000 gallons of blood each day. You receive a complete new bloodstream every three months, and the amount of blood within your body, about 7% of your body weight, is essentially constant.
In terms of chemical composition, human blood most closely resembles seawater.
Since the different blood types were discovered, Type A-H, the rarest type, has been found in less than a dozen people. Type O is the most common blood type.
Every square inch of human skin consists of an astonishing twenty feet of blood vessels.
Having picked up carbon dioxide and other wastes from the body’s cells as it circulates, blood is a purplish, blue colour in the veins as it returns to the heart. It is red only in the arteries when it is full of oxygen when leaving the heart. This means that blood is red in only half your body, but wherever cut yourself you will bleed red because the blood is instantly exposed to oxygen.

Chinese New Year
BY HOLIDAY MATHIS
The heart-focused Leo moon reminds us that often "being in love" is more akin to infatuation than it is to higher states of love. There is still a value in this type of passion. A fascination with one person makes all of life spring into vivid declaration. Noticing the grandeur in one person allows the ability to see the beauty in everything.
ARIES (March 21-April 19). There are some paths you step onto that feel so right, you suspect they are unavoidable. Predestined. The wind carries you chariot style and simultaneously rushes in your face.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20). There are people out there who could potentially resonate with you, like you, love you -- if they could only get to you. Put yourself in the public eye in a bigger way.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Investigate the options -- there are so many different ways to accomplish your goal. You will be so much more productive than you thought you could be once you find the right system.
CANCER (June 22-July 22). Because you live inside your mind, you don't realize how special it really is. That's why you need people around you like that Pisces and that Capricorn you know who remind you who you are.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You respect your deadlines. Not only that, but you appreciate how the limit pushes and concentrates your talents. Today you'll deliver a powerful presentation and do it on time.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Just because you enjoy it doesn't mean it's not work. You'll sweat and toil and smile. To be tired at the end of a day of enjoyment feels so much better than the kind of exhaustion that comes from a joyless day.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Today's realization will come like a wakeup call in a five-star hotel: polite and effective. You'll get up and do things differently than you did when you were "asleep."
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Your charisma is turned up, and most people can't help but say yes to even your craziest ideas. That means it will be important to keep "no" people around you to keep you grounded and reasonable.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The secret to happiness is simple today. At work, work. When not at work, enjoy your family or have fun doing your own thing -- as long as it's not working!
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Some of the fun will have to do with a live performance. If you're not up to it, make yourself go anyway. Everything will be vivid and memorable in person, so don't cheat yourself by staying in with the remote.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Judging by certain comments that are aimed at you, it might be hard to tell that family members are actually on your side. The only way to get past this gracefully is to take the high road.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Pay back old debt, or give back by teaching an intern or mentoring a lower-level employee. Your best wins come when you are merely showing others how to be successful.
TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Aug. 13). There's wild fun at first, but in the weeks to come, this solar return also brings lessons in patience, compassion and kindness. Relationships will grow in tenderness through the end of the year. Your whimsical idea in September will be a moneymaker. Family members will help one another reach success -- you taught them this. Cancer and Aquarius people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 5, 50, 14, 39 and 48.
ASTROLOGICAL QUESTIONS: "I've spent the past 34 years in what seems like a parade of endlessly bad relationships, and the only common element in all of them is ME! According to my natal chart, I am supposed to be challenged in the marriage/relationship sector of my life, but I have no idea how to overcome it. Any help you can provide on the topic of actually applying this knowledge would be wonderful, especially as it relates to the future of my love life! I was born on Sept. 17, 1973, at 2:07 p.m. in Clearwater Beach, Fla."
Even with a body of astrological knowledge, it's still hard to be objective when looking at ourselves. When I'm stumped by ME, I'll ask the stars their opinion as to what's going on, as though they were real characters with needs and wants, which they are! Your 7th house Saturn in Cancer could say, in an authoritative baritone: "I absolutely need a responsible partner who is emotionally mature and can handle my occasional freak-outs." Your Mercury in Libra squaring Saturn chimes in: "Well, I don't need all that; I love a good-looking intellectual." When you give your planets a voice, you'll be surprised how much they'll tell you.
CELEBRITY PROFILES: Iconic filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock was referred to as "the master of suspense" for his manner of delivering psychological thrills and chills. Born when the sun and Venus were both in Leo, the sign of entertainment, it should not come as a surprise that Hitchcock's moon was in Scorpio, the sign associated with the spooky side of life.

Capricorn Dec 21 – Jan 20
As a Capricorn, you’re probably a responsible family member and pillar of strength in your community, with springing surprises few and far between. Fear not, this is a passing phase and may just do you the world of good. One should not always take life so seriously.
Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 18
This week your love life can give you all the excitement you need or be downright disruptive. It all depends on how you play the game. Chances are if you’re too distant you might get the cold shoulder in return. Since you have to be present to win the prize, why not sweep him/her away on a weekend escape for two. Family concerns and domestic chores could tie you down this week, which may be a bit of a bother for a Gemini who likes to flit around. It’s however a week when you’re likely to have good relations with your loved ones, so the joy of their company should outweigh the demand on your time. If you have a sibling, this is a great time to catch up, especially if he/she lives in a faraway place. Surprise him/her with a visit or a call.
Cancer Jun 21 – Jul 21
Due to unexpected matters in both your professional life and in your social circle that need to be taken care of, the tempo of your life could pick up considerably. Although this may leave little room for the much needed time by yourself, you’re bound to be rewarded with a sense of achievement. When it comes to money matters, be careful with your cash. It’s a time when financial risk-taking could be tempting, but futile.
Leo Jul 22 – Aug 22
Wanting to see more of the world and/or seeking new experiences may take you places this week. As it is, it’s a great time to travel, not only for fun, but also to broaden your horizons. Interaction with a foreigner could make for an inspiring time and put a whole new spin on your life. On another tack, it’s a good time to be pro-active about your goals and work hard at achieving them, even if you don’t get the deserved pat on the back.
Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22
With the Sun moving into your sign, it’s time to turn your attention to yourself and promote your own interests. Chances are, as a Virgo, that you want to be helpful and of service to others, but this is the time to be kind to yourself. The focus is on self-development and growth, enlarging your life experience and furthering your ideals. Rather than allowing little things to hold you back, spread your wings and fly high.

Although money seems to flow in, there is the potential for it to flow out at least as easily. Career will be about a lot of teamwork. Artistic fields see opportunity for growth.
Love and Relationships: You will be more attractive than usual to romantic interests this year. But avoid being impulsive in this area; it will not serve you well. Relationships need patience and tolerance this year more than ever.

Improved communication is essential for both of you now. The second half of the year offers your relationship more stability, even for the very long-term.
Health and Happiness: Things will become more quiet, perhaps even a bit lonely by year's end but after an intense year, you can use this period to go inward, and recharge your batteries. Overall, your health should be fine this year. That doesn't mean you should abuse it.
